Between Two Topiaries, Episode 2: Forced Bulbs
OSGF
Although it may not feel like it, spring is officially here at Oak Spring, and so are hundreds of forced bulbs.
For decades, Oak Spring’s gardeners - including our Head Gardener Todd Lloyd - have spent the late winter and the chilly days of March forcing a range of beautiful daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and other early spring beauties. During Bunny Mellon’s time, colorful forced bulbs adorned everything from local roadsides to the interior of her homes to the cockpit of her private plane in the spring; at the Oak Spring Garden Foundation today, they are also in abundance all over the foundation.
On this second episode of Between Two Topiaries - the show where Todd and the rest of the team chat about all things gardening - Todd and Thomas Bardroff, our Horticulture Intern, chat about the hundreds of bulbs they forced this year, and the history of the practice at Oak Spring.
