Apples

CSA Crop List

Apples

OSGF

Plant family: Rosaceae

Latin Name: Malus domestica

Varieties We Grow: Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Arkansas Black, Winesap and more!

Storage: Apples can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 6 months, or even longer depending on the variety and temperature of the cold storage. In your home refrigerator, expect apples to store for about 1 month.

Before starting at the farm full-time in March, the BCCF Apprentices spend a couple months pruning Mr. and Mrs. Mellon’s apple and peach trees. For Mrs. Mellon, apple trees were always a sign of home, and she took great comfort in their presence at Oak Spring. Though the trees are primarily pruned for health and aesthetics, the BCCF still harvests from the trees each year. Our favorite variety at the BCCF is Arkansas black, partially because of its ability to store so well, and because it makes great cider!

Perhaps one of the most versatile fruits, apples can be consumed in so many different ways– eaten fresh off the tree, baked into an apple pie, or tossed into a salad. For the past three years, the BCCF farm team has processed and jarred about 2,400 lbs of Oak Spring apples into our very own apple butter. Jars of our apple butter are shared with our CSA members and guests and sold locally, including at our Oak Spring gift shop. Apple butter is filled with warming spices, like cinnamon, clove and nutmeg, which can be perfect for cold fall and winter months. But, it can also be enjoyed in the spring and summer. Spread apple butter on toasts, sandwiches or crackers, accompany it with cheeses (like Brie), mix in with your favorite yogurt and granola or incorporate it into more savory dishes, like pizza, pork chops, meatballs, galettes and grilled cheese sandwiches.
