Broccoli
OSGF
Plant Family: Brassicaceae
Latin Name: Brassica oleracea var. italica
Varieties We Grow: Monty
Storage: Broccoli does not store long so be sure to eat or freeze (blanch first!) as soon as possible (2-4 days). Broccoli will store in the refrigerator the longest if kept in a container with some air circulation.
This year, the BCCF will be growing the broccoli variety ‘Monty,’ which has a high heat tolerance and ability to grow through our Virginia Spring. Once temperatures get too high in the summer, the broccoli will stop producing and slowly die off.
Broccoli is an easy vegetable to prepare and incorporate into meals. Many people choose to steam, saute or roast their broccoli as a side dish, which is a great way to enjoy the earthy and sweet flavors of broccoli. Try roasting your broccoli florets with garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil until tender or crispy if you prefer. We also suggest throwing the broccoli into casseroles, soups and quiches, and it can be a great topping on pizza. Broccoli can also be eaten raw– try it on a salad!
