Turnips
OSGF
Plant Family: Brassicaceae
Latin Name: Brassica rapa subsp. rapa
Varieties We Grow: Scarlet Queen Red, Purple Top White Globe, Hakurei
Storage: Store turnip roots in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Turnip greens will spoil fast in the refrigerator (within 2 days), so keep the entire turnip or just the greens in an airtight container/bag.
All turnips, both storage and salad turnips alike, are part of the Brassica family. Purple Globe Top are perhaps the most common and most popular turnip around. They are great roasted or added to baked dishes, like a gratin. Salad turnips (or Hakurei) have a slightly higher water content than typical storage turnips, giving them a crisp, even-keeled texture and delicious raw flavor. Just like radishes, salad turnips can be chopped up and tossed into salads, dipped into an herb butter or combined with cheese and crackers for quick snacks. Salad turnips may also be cooked, which bring out a natural sweetness. All turnip greens are also edible - try sauteeing them with sliced turnips or slow cook with a broth of your choice, a bit of butter and a piece of ham/bacon.
